Fitness Friday: Using Portion Control In A World Where Everything Is Super-sized

Divided plate

I’ll be the first one to say that I was not a big fan of portion control in the past. My idea of portion control was to stop eating when I was full. I believed that portion control was time consuming and emotionally draining. Eating at restaurants made it even harder for me to apply this concept. But like they say, “Where there is a will, there is a way.” And I found a way.

Portion control

I invested in a plate that’s already sectioned. Having

such plate is good for three reasons. Number one: it makes it easy for me to have a balanced meal. I get all my veggies, a little bit of meat, and a little bit of carbs. I have heard stories after stories about how white rice is not good for you when you are trying to lose weight. I say it depends on how much of that white rice you eat. Brown rice might make you feel fuller faster, but it is still carbs. I love white rice so much that I would rather sprinkle a little bit on my salad instead of eliminating it completely from my diet.

Number two: It helps me with eating five times a day. Before having this plate, I used to have one big lunch and no dinner. Now I can enjoy my lunch and still have room for a snack two hours later. And the best thing about it is that I can use the same plate for my dinner, too.

Fitness Friday               And number three: It helps me make better choices when I eat out. We live in a world where most of us believe that bigger is better. We want more for little money. Even when more can be detrimental to our health. We have the big mac, the whopper Senior, and my personal favorite, the pizza buffet. I mean seriously! how many pizzas can you eat? Okay, don’t answer that! I have this picture in my head of how much carbs I should eat when I eat out. I always think about how much I would put in my sectioned plate when I go to different restaurants that offer buffet options. If I go to a restaurant that does not offer buffet options, I asked to take the rest of the food with me. Just because I don’t want it to go to waste, that does not mean I have to stuffed myself either.

Investing in a sectioned or divided plate is the best thing you can do if you are having trouble controlling your portions. You can also use a food scale if you have time for that.  A sectioned plate can be used when eating your regular meals. Keep in mind that the bigger section is for your fruits or veggies, not the fried chicken. This kind of plate will train your brain to eat healthy even when you eat out.

How do you deal with portion control on a daily basis?

Brilliant idea with the plate. I am also practising portion control and it's been going well. It gets easier when you 'train' your brain and body to be in synch and get used to it. On the news yesterday they were talking about how being 'big' is now seen as 'normal'. Clothing manufacturers now have to adjust size labels to suit us and make us feel comfortable mentally when shopping.

Fantastic post and so true!! Portion controll definitely helps me a lot as well. I used to eat whatever and always had the idea that leaving food behind was a waste. I changed that attitude towards and it helped my diet!
