Top 5 Hair Goals For The Year 2016

Here we go again! Another chance to have 365 days of great hair moments. Another chance for us to get our hair routine right. And of course, another brutal winter is here. I am already feeling the dryness.  My scalp is already caking. And the need to moisturize my hair twice a day is inevitable.  I am not big on new year’s resolutions, but I have set some goals for my hair this year. One of them is to properly moisturize my hair. By that I mean spraying my hair with water and let the water lift the cuticle layers of the hair before adding any cream or oil to it. I remember oiling my ends a lot in the beginning of my hair journey, thinking that oil only could moisturize my hair. Little did I know that the oil was actually coating my hair. I hope I get it right this year.

Top 5 Hair Goals For The Year 2016

After I washed my hair last Monday, I could not understand what was happening to my scalp the next day and the day after that. My scalp felt so dry. I found myself oiling my scalp and moisturizing my hair at least twice a day last week. Today, I did something different. I went straight to co-washing. I used Tresemme Moisture Rich conditioner for the first round. Then, I added a generous amount of Alberto Vo5 Kiwi and Lime clarifying conditioner to my hair and washed it some more. I deep conditioned using Aussie Moist 3 Minute Miracle deep conditioner. I added Cantu Argan oil leave-in cream and steamed the hair before adding oil to seal the moisture.

Hair goals for the year 2016

  1. Washing my hair as needed: I find myself washing my hair less often during the winter months. Number one is because I get lazy. And number two is because I sweat less and don’t really feel the need to do it.
  2. Adding honey to my deep conditioner and deep condition with heat: I learned that if I  want my hair to stay moisturized longer, I have to make sure the moisture get into the hair. And using heat is the best way to achieve that. Honey works well on my hair when it’s cold outside. I will make an effort to use it more this winter.
  3. Using a hair steamer after adding my leave-ins: Before I add any kind of oil to my hair, I need to commit to  using a hair steamer to help the moisturizer get into each strand. Because I have low porosity hair, Some moisturizing creams just seat on top of my strands until they dry out.
  4. Trimming my dry ends: Holding on to my dry ends during the winter is the worse thing I can do to my hair.  I made that mistake last year, but I will not do it again. If my ends don’t curl up, or look straight after I wash my hair, I want to get rid of them right away.
  5. Oiling  and massaging my scalp: The only thing worse than dry ends is a dry scalp. I know that, but I failed to oil and massage my scalp as often as I should last year. I also know that dry scalp can lead to shedding, dandruff, and slow growth. Mixing a few drops of tea tree oil and peppermint oil with a few teaspoons of extra virgin olive oil did the trick for me last year, but I failed to keep up with my routine.

My hair goal is to grow the sides and my back out. I have been shaving those areas for about a year. Now I'm ready to have a full head of hair again. I also need to start oiling my scalp.

    • January 6, 2016 / 2:48 pm

I need to grow my side out too, Sonya! Oiling the scalp helps a lot with dryness.

Nerline, I need to adopt your hair goals! I love the idea of honey and I was unaware about allowing the cuticle to lift before applying moisture. Great advice!

I hope your hair journey proves successful this year doll!! Have you ever tried coconut oil in your hair, I heard it was good for the scalp and hair. Prevents dryness and dry scalp too, was thinking of giving it a go as the winter is attacking my scalp already. Wish you a sweet day xx

    • January 6, 2016 / 3:31 pm

I have used coconut oil before. I stopped because I was experiencing problem with my protein treatments. I read and article that states that coconut oil helps with protein retention. I will start using it again soon. Thanks Kizzy!

I don't know what to do about my scalp and how dry it gets this winter too, i haven't really set any hair goals for 2016 , maybe because i'm still learning how to take care of my natural hair. But i totally agree with you on all points. Happy New Year Nerline !! Hope you and your family had a wonderful holiday break

Happy new year Uzo. As long as you don't use too much protein and add lots of moisture, you will be fine. Thanks love!

Happy New Year Nerline. Great goal! I remember using oil as a hair 'moisturizer' too at the start of my journey, always had dry but oily hair!
I might also try using water which you have mentioned, need to get this head of hair in top shape!.

    • January 7, 2016 / 2:40 am

Girl, I used to slap that castor oil on my hair like it was nobody's business! I hope you get that big hair in shape, too. Happy new year!

These are great hair goals, Nerline! I've never tried using honey in my hair. Now you have me curious. I don't like how dry my hair is during the winter months, so I'm always tucking it away. Tucking it away makes me lazy about giving it the proper care it needs. So I most definitely want to stay on top of being consistent with my regimen-even during these cool winter months.

I wish you the best in your hair care goals, love!

I hate washing my hair when it is cold too. Putting it away is the right thing to do sometimes!!

I start every year planning my summer regimen (my hair HATES summer). My goal for the year is to finally have a successful summer regimen and not have a major setback for once. I've decided to buy a steamer and your steaming your leave in conditioner tip is heaven sent.

Hair can be so much work sometimes, that's why I chop it to my sholders once a year. This year I want to keep it long because I think that is what suits me best. I guess my goal is to resist cutting it, trims maybe. I do agree that ends do need to be gone for your hair to grow, good point!

These are great goals. I make a DiY goats milk conditioner which I add honey to and it aids in the slip and moisture retention.

I don't have low po hair but I think that steaming after the leave in can be beneficial for all hair types. I'm going to try it and see how my hair responds 🙂

My hair goals for this year involves me doing protective styles and not taking them out too early. Because of my job, I don't have time to do my hair in the morning. So, I will do protective styles and on weeks that I want my hair to have a break. I will make sure it is moisturize very well.

  22. January 18, 2016 / 1:28 am

Great goals. My goal is not to cut my hair this year. We shall see how that goes 🙂

  23. January 21, 2016 / 5:44 pm

I'm with you on hair goals #1 & #4. I actually got a keratin treatment before the cold hit so I avoid knots and wash my hair a lot less. Working out great so far :).
